On Valentine’s Day, 1983, Nationwide Insurance offered Greg Whitten a contract to begin selling insurance. With no office, no employees or customers, the start was challenging. Just 23 years old, Greg Whitten used hard work and determination to get things off of the ground. Over time, the company began evolving by hiring multiple employees and with the construction of a new office in Cambridge, MD.
In the beginning, Whitten Insurance sold personal lines and life insurance. The journey into the agriculture market fueled additional growth. The company is now one of the top agencies in the region for agriculture insurance.
In 2005, commercial insurance became a new quest for Whitten Insurance Agency. Over the next ten years, Whitten Group became the largest insurer of businesses for Nationwide in MD, DE and DC. By 2012, the company had grown to 19 employees in three offices (Cambridge, Easton and Federalsburg). At this time, Greg Whitten added Lori Nagel and Kenny Kreiser as partners. Lori was responsible for property and casualty operations and service, while Kenny focused on property and casualty sales. This allowed Greg Whitten to drive significant growth in individual and group retirement/distribution planning lines of business.
In 2015, Whitten Insurance Agency signed a contract with Nationwide, which granted them commercial independence and allowed the agency to add additional carriers and expand its commercial offering. After this expansion, Whitten Insurance evolved in to Whitten Group, LLC in 2016. Whitten Group allows us to better define our offerings by separating the business into two divisions; Whitten Insurance Services and Whitten Retirement Solutions.
